Capital of the Charente-Maritime department, located at the bottom of a bay and protected to this day by the 18th-century bastions Vauban had built, La Rochelle remains a city of rich history and imposing monuments.
From the 12th through the 14th centuries, the town was constantly changing hands between the English and the French; only in 1372 onwards did it become French for once and for all. From the 14th through the 16th centuries, it was one of the great French ports, the point of departure for the first settlers in Canada and the founders of Montreal.

With its brightly coloured pleasure craft and its elegant quayside buildings, its iconic watchtowers and on-shore lighthouses, the La Rochelle picturesque Vieux Port is an enchanting spot to take a break and to feel charmingly relaxed.

The residences dating back to the Renaissance and the 18th century with their harmonious white façades bear traces of the one-time merchants and ship-owners who made money first through the wine and salt trades, then in their exchanges with America.
La Rochelle should be discovered by strolling down the banks of the old port, which is the most picturesque part of town, and by wandering through the dense grid of pedestrian streets.
