Stretching from the ferry port in Ouistreham (Caën) to the popular tourist resort of La Rochelle in Poitou-Charentes, La VéloFrancette is a 630km signposted cycle route which opened in the summer of 2015. The route enters the north of the Poitou-Charentes region from Saumur, following the picturesque Thouet valley to Parthenay. Along the way discover the rich local heritage: fortified towns, old bridges, mills, chateaux and churches.
Next stop is Niort, capital of the Deux-Sèvres and home of the impressive Donjon, from where the route heads onto the flat open paths of the Marais Poitevin, or Green Venice. Follow the canals along the family-friendly bicycle paths, enjoying the natural splendour of these unique waterways before turning south towards the lively port of La Rochelle and the Atlantic Coast.
Cycle along the Canal de Marans and the Canal de Rompsay, then stop to marvel at the final point on this journey, the historic Vieux Port of La Rochelle. Here you can park your bikes and soak up the holiday atmosphere in one of the many lively pavement cafés and bars…
