Floating market, Le Vanneau - July 2012
There’s nothing quite like the Floating Market which takes place every year on the last Saturday in July at Le Vanneau in the Marais Poitevin.
In 2011, nearly 15,000 visitors brought their shopping baskets to buy from some 50 local producers who sell from flat-bottomed barges along the shady canals of France’s ‘Little Venice’.
Look out for local patisseries, goats’ cheeses, and delicious fruit and vegetables including succulent Charentais melons, as well as wines, cognac and Pineau des Charentes.
You’ll also spot green jams and liqueur made from the angelica plant which loves the moist, shady conditions of this enchanting marshland.
Not to be missed!
