Floating market - 30 July 2016 - Le Vanneau, Marais Poitevin, Green Venice

A market with a difference in the heart of the Marais Poitevin

Floating market in Le Vanneau, Marais Poitevin

One of the ‘Grand Site de France’, the Marais Poitevin is a must-see for all visitors to the region and the floating market held each year at Le Vanneau provides the perfect opportunity. Also known as the Venice Verte or Green Venice, the creation of the unique environment of the Marais Poitevin began in the days of Alienor d’Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart and the area remains steeped in history and tradition.

On the last Saturday in July, the village of Le Vanneau recreates a traditional floating market where traders would bring their produce to the market on the local flat bottomed boats and buyers would float from boat to boat picking out their requirements. Step aboard one of the flat bottomed boats to fully appreciate the skill of the local boats men and you too can buy local produce from beans and honey to snails and local eels!

In this world of waterways, everything needed to be moved by boat including the livestock – the whole family will enjoy watching the cows and other livestock travel down the canals as part of the parade. There is also an extensive photograph exhibition showing how the canals were once used before cars became the norm.

There are also opportunities to taste local specialities, watch traditional dances and enjoy the regional music before you head home with all your purchases!

Market from 9h00 to 13h00 / Lunch and Dinner on site / Events and music during the afternoon and evening

Getting there: Le Vanneau is only 50 minutes by car from La Rochelle and the nearest TGV station is at Niort.
