Marais Poitevin Maraisthon - 17 June 2012
Runners, joggers and walkers will head for the picturesque village of Coulon on June 17 for a programme of sporting and nature events linked to France’s original ecological marathon, the Maraisthon.
Just 45 minutes from La Rochelle, Coulon stands on the banks of the Sèvre Niortaise river at the heart of the Marais Poitevin, an area of marshland, meadows and canals known as ‘Green Venice’.
More than 1000 runners are expected to take part in the Maraisthon which starts at 8.30 am, followed by a 10km event for fun-runners.
Competitors follow a flat, shaded circuit, with more than half the route on fine gravel paths through an idyllic natural landscape.
Meanwhile, an 11km guided walk will enable visitors to discover the Marais Poitevin’s rich flora and fauna with an expert. Other eco-friendly events include a display of electric vehicles, exhibitions on the environment, and organic food stalls.
