A classical experience not to be missed!

Each year, three magical evenings enthral concert goers. Watch as the Grand Plage at Royan is transformed from a popular and busy beach into the most atmospheric auditorium with the Atlantic waves as a backdrop and stars out above.

Director and conductor, Jerôme Pillement, invites eighty musicians from the orchestra of the Paris Opera and other national orchestras to form the Violon sur le Sable Symphony Orchestra. Along with prestigious international soloists, they perform a varied programme suitable for a wide audience, featuring popular classical pieces, music from films and other more modern pieces. In 2012, the repertoire stretched from Mozart to the Rolling Stones. Each of the three evenings has a different programme as well as different soloists.

The concerts are all free – just bring your blanket or small chair down to the beach and enjoy the sunset. It’s a very social affair, so join in with your picnic or pick up a meal from one of the beachfront restaurants. Be warned though, the best spots go early but the 50,000 strong audience for each concert is easily accommodated and giant screens either side of the stage ensure everyone has a good view. Each concert finishes with a fabulous firework display set to music – making it the most magical of evenings.

If sitting on the beach sounds a little chilly (and it can be once the sun goes down!)  then opt for a seat in the ‘Tribunes’, there is a charge for these and it is best to pre-book.
