  • Collégiale Sainte Croix

    Extraordinary site, former Roman collegiate church featuring an 11th century chancel in Burgundy style which is a prestigious setting for expositions and concerts. Painted murals from 13th C. Built on the foundations of a very ancient Christian sanctuary, the Saint Croix collegiate church (12th C) is one of the major monuments of Romanesque art in the Poitou area. The vaulted ceiling of the magnificent Romanesque chancel features extraordinary XIVth. C. murals. The church was used to exorcise the possessed in 1634 and its nave used for more than a century for fairs and markets (until 1991). Modified during its long history, the collegiate is now home to the Sainte Croix Cultural Centre which hosts activities, exhibitions and concerts throughout the year. Also, information about Loudun and the surrounding area with places of interest may be picked up at the centre.

  • Espace d'Archéologie Industrielle du Donjon de Gouzon

    The entirely restored 12th century dungeon houses the Industrial Archaeology Museum which presents Chauvigny's rich industrial history of stone quarries, the porcelaine factory as well as ancient mills, tileries, and lime kilns. From Neolithic times to the present day, chalk to limestone, Neolithic pottery to Apilco porcelain, physically produced energy to nuclear energy, the industries here are seen through the eyes of the archaeologist by means of videos, interactive terminals and models. Take the specially commissioned elevator (a recognised piece of modern art) up to the panoramic terrace for an exceptional view of the medieval town and the surrounding countryside.

  • Musée des Gens de Cherves

    This farm promotes and maintains the regional culture of the Poitou region, usuing CD, DVD and collections of costumes and tools.     The Centre is in an exceptional location and has a superb collection of carvings dating from the 12thC originating from the region of Loudun.  An area is devoted to the understandaing of the Romanesque bestiary.The Sainte Croix Centre shows to what extent Loudun's architecture was influenced by the Romanesque style. The Romanesque Art Centre serves to underline the town's rich history and to show off its cultural heritage. There are five exhibition rooms : a prestigious collection of 12th century Romanesque chapel from various places of worship in and around Loudun and a room explaining the Romanesque bestiary. Outside the centre, beautiful flower beds accentuated by amazing original Romanesque vaults. Also to see : Loudun and its rich cultural and historical heritage.
