Description Review Access

Atop a rocky promontory, the castle majestically overlooks the town and the Dolo valley. The site has been inhabited, on and off, since Celtic times. The first enclosure dates from the 11th century and the second, with its 38 towers, from the 13th century. Medieval enclosures remain. As for the castle, probably founded in the late 10th and early 11th century by the Beaumont family, it covers substantial ground on the rounded edge of a plateau. Thanks to the strategic location, it was of great military importance in the struggles waged in Poitou by the French and English kings over the course of three centuries. The vestiges to be seen today date primarily from the late 11th and early 12th centuries. As regards the 19th-century apartments, from one season to the next they host temporary exhibits, a painting salon in May, a sculpture salon in November. Every 2 years, a sculpture symposium takes place on castle grounds.
