Prehistoric art in Poitou-Charentes

While the Pyrenees and the Périgord regions are dotted with adorned grottos that constitute renowned masterpieces discovered long ago, many of the sites in Poitou-Charentes are closed to the public and consequently less widely known. Poitou-Charentes art is essentially engraved and sculpted, and it is in our region that such types of representation attained the heights of technical, iconographic and monumental perfection.

Admist hidden treasures, a site to be discovered!

In Angles-sur-l’Anglin, Vienne, the sculpted Roc-aux-Sorciers frieze is a Magdalenian sculpture masterpiece of which there exists no equivalent in terms of the rare artistic quality and sheer scope of the work.

The paleo-site of Saint-Césaire

The 1979 discovery of the remains of Pierrette, a young Neanderthal woman, led to the creation of the interactive prehistoric center. The visitor will be cast back some 15 billion years: the time of the Big Bang! Indeed, this center of prehistory invites you to a confrontation with the Neanderthal man.

And there are new attractions: morphing, 3D; you will even be able to arm wrestle with your ancestors! Outside, children may invade a prehistoric hunters’ camp.

The paleo-site also includes the discovery of prehistoric animals and a number of spectacles on prehistoric themes.
